About Mary Levens

Mary Levens is a Group Analyst, having worked in the field of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy for over 40 years. She works with individuals and groups , both clinically and within training organisations and universities. Before training as a Group Analyst, Mary originally trained as an Occupational Therapist and was the Head Occupational Therapist of a Specialist Eating Disorders unit for 13 years. During this time she qualified and worked as an Art Psychotherapist and later as a Psychodrama Psychotherapist. Mary worked for many years in Therapeutic Communities, the Prison Service and Drugs Rehabilitation. She specialised in using psychodynamically oriented creative therapies for people with Eating Disorders and Personality Disorders.
Having studied at the London Centre for Psychotherapy, the Tavistock Clinic and the Portman clinic, Mary then trained at the Institute of Group Analysis, where she qualified as a Group Analyst.
Mary has an interest in the training and development of psychotherapists and has run experiential groups for trainees for many years. She works with Mental Health professionals offering supervision and training both in the public sector and within her private practice. She is also involved in facilitating staff support groups both in the NHS and in the private sector.
Mary’s clinical practice includes both medium/long term individual and group psychotherapy and she has consulting rooms in North London and Central London. Her psychotherapy practice is for people with a wide range of emotional difficulties.
Mary has an academic interest in applied psychoanalytic ideas and has written extensively in this area. She has lectured on the integration of psychoanalytic thinking and the creative therapies, particularly in relation to borderline phenomena, in the UK, the USA and Israel.
